Sustainability within reach: the Ecoesione game

Ecoesione is a complete and thought-provoking game, suitable both for seasoned board game enthusiasts and for those new to the tabletop world. It offers a range of strategic possibilities and challenges players to make thoughtful decisions in order to avoid overusing the planet’s resources. Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the experience: using natural resources responsibly is essential to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals before the game ends.

Recommended for ages 9 and up, Ecoesione comes in three formats: boxed game, card game, and roll & write.

From question to game
Ecoesione was born from a simple yet crucial question:
How can we ensure high levels of well-being for all while respecting environmental limits?
The answer takes shape in a strategic and engaging board game that helps players explore—through play—the interconnections between the Sustainable Development Goals and the urgent need to move away from fossil fuels.

Created in collaboration between ecological economists from the University of Pisa and game designers from the Golem’s Lab association in Bologna, Ecoesione invites players to engage with themes of sustainability, climate justice, and the construction of a future-oriented society.

How the game works

In Ecoesione, players compete to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals while gradually phasing out fossil fuels. The game is for 2 to 4 players and combines card-based mechanics with character placement in a unique and engaging way.

Players use building and resource cards, managing three key fossil resources: coal, gas, and oil. These are limited each round—and when they run out in the common supply, the game ends. Managing resources carefully and finding ways to recover or replace them is crucial.

Through character placement, players can enhance buildings, activate strategic actions, recruit experts, and plant trees to mitigate climate emergencies and earn points. Each player builds their own strategy, balancing efficiency and social prosperity with a systemic vision.

Three versions for an inclusive, transformative experience

In addition to the full boxed game (the base version), which combines multiple layers of strategy and gameplay, Ecoesione includes a simplified card-only version using just the building and resource decks. This version (included in the base game) is ideal for quick gameplay sessions, helping players get familiar with Ecoesione’s mechanics and explore how to balance resource limits and social well-being.

We’ve also developed a Roll & Write version, made up of a single A4 sheet, a few mini cards, and a pencil. This version is perfect for playing with larger groups, while still preserving the core Ecoesione experience.
