MAPS: at the forefront of post-growth research
The MAPS project aims to develop innovative solutions to address sustainability challenges. Among its main goals is the creation of new models, assessments, and policies that promote a balance between well-being and environmental sustainability. The project explores transformative policy pathways capable of ensuring high levels of quality of life without compromising the environment. To do this, it relies on advanced simulation models based on ecological macroeconomics — innovative tools that offer new perspectives for tackling global challenges.
Another key contribution of MAPS is the preparation of post-growth scenarios to be integrated into major scientific assessments, providing concrete support for guiding policy decisions and defining sustainable strategies for the future.
“There is no evidence that economic growth can reduce environmental impacts enough to ensure a sustainable future. Moreover, the current development model is not improving people’s lives in European countries. We need a new approach that brings together human well-being and environmental sustainability,” said Simone D’Alessandro, Professor of Political Economy and project coordinator at the University of Pisa.
“Collaboration with the project partners,” D’Alessandro concluded, “will allow us to make significant progress in the field of ecological macroeconomics.”
MAPS is coordinated by the University of Barcelona and involves leading researchers from institutions across Europe, including the University of Pisa, the University of Surrey, the ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies, Instituto Superior Técnico for Research and Development (IST-ID), the University of Leeds, Corvinus University of Budapest, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Tampere University, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU).
